Specialty facials take toning, brightness, and texture to the next level–especially if your facials are to alleviate a certain skin condition, and not just for anti-aging and relaxation. Both Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning are mechanical exfoliation techniques that require no downtime (just sunscreen) afterward and can be even more effective when combined with resurfacing peels. Which is right for you? Even though sometimes you won’t know until you try or book a facial for yourself, these five questions can help!
- Do you have moderate to severe acne?
If yes, start with microdermabrasion. - Choose a faster reduction of either uneven pigmentation or fine lines.
Pigmentation: choose dermaplaning. Fine lines: choose microdermabrasion. - Are you a habitual makeup wearer?
Yes: choose dermaplaning. No: choose microdermabrasion. - Choose either increased brightening or reduction in raised scars
Brightening: dermaplaning. Raised scars: microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion uses a crystal tipped wand with vacuum suction to abrade the skin. It feels like light sandpaper, and the suction helps your skin to naturally create collagen and elastin. If you wish, you can see your skin cells on the filter after the treatment is done!
Dermaplaning uses a surgical scalpel to exfoliate peach fuzz as well as dead skin cells from your face. It is an advanced, deep exfoliation. While nicks and cuts are unlikely, the face may feel warm afterward. If you wish, you can see the peach fuzz hair and skin cells after the treatment is done!
Spa professionals recommend specialty facials 4-8 weeks apart to keep your skin moving towards your goals! With dermaplaning especially, it is important to keep moving forward in tracking your skincare history, so each treatment you receive builds from the last one. We recommend dermaplaning every 4-6 weeks, and microdermabrasion every 6-8. You skin cells replenish in about 28 days, so once a month won’t hurt! Plus, both relaxing and being able to look forward to something are invaluable benefits!
